Breast milk is an ideal food for neonates. It contains all the nutrients for normal growth
and development of a baby from the time of the birth to the first 6 months of life.
• Feedings may lasts as long as 30 to 45 minutes each as milk supply develops and the
infants learns the suck –swallow reflex.
• However as milk supply increases and the infant becomes more efficient at feeding, the
duration of feeding may shorten.
