At the end of this session, you will be able to understand:

Removable appliances can be used to treat only a small number of developing minor malocclusions. In malocclusions which require complex tooth movements, usually fixed appliances are utilized. Removable appliances can also be used in adjuvants to the fixed appliances. They are used as retainers after treatment with fixed appliances.

Fixed mechanical appliances are the most common and versatile appliances used in orthodontics for more than one reason. The main advantage of fixed appliances is that the patient compliance is dispensed off to a large extent. Unlike removable appliances that are capable of only tipping type of tooth movements, fixed appliances can bring about varied tooth movements, such as bodily movement, rotation, tipping, intrusion, extrusion, etc., all at a same time if required.
