Course info
This online course provides an in-depth understanding of carbohydrate metabolism, essential for students pursuing a career in biochemistry, pharmacy, or related fields. Throughout this course, participants will explore the key biochemical pathways involved in carbohydrate breakdown, storage, and synthesis, gaining insights into their roles in health and disease.
The course is divided into four weeks, with each week focusing on different metabolic processes, starting with the fundamentals and progressing through complex biochemical pathways.
Week 1:
We begin by introducing the concept of metabolism, explaining its definition, and distinguishing between catabolism and anabolism. We dive into the glycolysis pathway and its energetics, setting the stage for more complex metabolic pathways.
Week 2:
This week focuses on the Citric Acid Cycle, Gluconeogenesis, and the HMP Shunt. Students will learn about energy production, gluconeogenesis in maintaining blood glucose levels, and the role of the HMP Shunt in cellular functions.
Week 3:
We cover glycogen metabolism, including glycogenesis, glycogenolysis, and glycogen storage diseases. Special attention is given to the mechanism of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD) and its role in protection against malaria.
Week 4:
The final week delves into the Electron Transport Chain, exploring its role in oxidative phosphorylation and ATP synthesis. We discuss the mechanism of electron transport and the impact of inhibitors on cellular respiration.
Each week consists of video lectures, detailed study material, quizzes to reinforce key concepts, and assignments designed to deepen your understanding of the topics. By the end of the course, participants will have a comprehensive grasp of carbohydrate metabolism, its regulation, and its clinical relevance, preparing them for advanced studies or careers in the life sciences.
